Fine Line vs. Micro-Realism: Choosing a Tattoo Style in Berlin

Two of the most requested styles at Kas Inks in Berlin are fine line and micro-realism, and clients often arrive unsure which one actually fits what they're picturing. Both work small and both reward patience, but they ask for very different things from the skin, the design, and the person wearing it.

What fine line actually looks like

Fine line work is built from a single, unbroken kind of confidence: one needle width, minimal shading, and a design that reads clearly from across a room as much as up close. It suits botanical shapes, script, small figurative subjects, and anything where the line itself is the point. Fine line ages well when it's kept simple and given enough room to breathe.

Where micro-realism asks for something different

Micro-realism compresses real detail, an eye, a portrait, a moth's wing, into a few centimetres of skin. It relies on fine shading and controlled contrast rather than line alone, which means it needs a steadier hand and a longer sitting. Placement matters more here too, since flat, low-movement areas hold the detail longest over the years.

How to decide

A useful question is what you want people to notice first: the shape, or the detail inside it. If it's shape, fine line will hold up beautifully. If it's the feeling of a specific, recognizable image, micro-realism is worth the extra sitting time. Many pieces at Kas Inks actually sit between the two, using fine line structure with small realist accents.

If you're still deciding, that's exactly what a consultation is for. Get in touch through the contact form and we'll work out which approach suits your idea, your skin, and how the piece should look in ten years, not just on the day it's finished.
